ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Christina Ordonez (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), freshman Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) and senior Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) each scored goals, as the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team downed No. 21 San Diego State, 3-1, on Sunday (Sept. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Aztecs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the match on a goal from Carli Johnson. She found some space in the Michigan back third and fired a shot from 25 yards out that went into the top left corner.

That lead was short-lived, however, as the Wolverines answered less than three minutes later to knot the score. Senior Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) started the play by sending a long ball to Ezurike, who took the ball up the right flank, pivoted on the outside edge of the 18-yard box and slipped a ball between two San Diego State defenders to senior Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale). Her cross into the box was tipped by San Diego State goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn, but the ball fell right to Ordonez at the goal line, where she tapped it into the net for the goal.

The Wolverines added another goal before the half to go into the locker room with a 2-1 advantage. Junior Chloe Sosenko (South Lyon, Mich./Brighton) crossed a ball into the box that was flicked on by Ezurike. As Vaughn came off her line to challenge, the ball was redirected the other way by Lewis and into the back of the net.

Michigan added an insurance goal in the 65th minute. Senior Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) took a throw-in from the far side. The throw landed about seven yards from goal and took a bounce over a San Diego State defender right to Ezurike, who established position right at the six-yard box. Ezurike gathered the ball and tapped it in for the score to make it 3-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield) made three saves in net, securing her fourth win in as many matches.

U-M continues its homestand on Friday (Sept. 6) vs. Pepperdine. The match will begin at 5 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
