RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Senior/junior Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute to break a scoreless tie, sending the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at UC Riverside on Friday (Sept. 2) at UCR Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines have now won four straight since dropping their season opener against Akron two weeks ago, with Stachel netting goals in the last three contests.

Sophomore forward Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) was taken down inside the box by UC Riverside defender Kristy Adcock, causing the referee to issue a penalty kick for the Wolverines. Stachel was selected to take it and buried it into the net, the only offense either team got during the game.

Senior/junior goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made four saves to record her second shutout of the season (12th career). Stachel and freshman Christina Murillo (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) each recorded four shots in the game, while junior Holly Hein (Castaic, Calif./West Ranch) and Ezurike had three.

The Wolverines' swing through Southern California continues on Sunday (Sept. 4) with a game against Pepperdine. The game will begin at 1 p.m. PDT in Malibu.
