INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday (Sept. 15), dropping a 1-0 decision to Butler at the Butler Bowl.
The first 29 minutes were fairly even, but Butler changed that in the 30th minute, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal from McKenzie Muchow. The Bulldogs advanced the ball up the field, and Muchow found some space in the scoring area, slotting a shot into the lower-right corner past Michigan freshman goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield) for the 1-0 lead. Both teams had five shots in the first half, but the Wolverines failed to record a shot on goal, trailing by a goal heading into halftime.
The Wolverines had five shots on goal in the second half against just one for Butler. Michigan's best chance came in the final 90 seconds off a corner kick. Junior Christina Murillo (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) sent it into the box to freshman Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), who put a touch on the ball towards net, but her attempt was cleared off the line by a Butler defender for a team save, preserving the lead.
The Wolverines held the edge in shots (18-9), shots on goal (5-3) and corner kicks (8-3). Bucklin made two saves.
Michigan enters Big Ten play beginning next Sunday (Sept. 22), facing Iowa in Iowa City. The match will begin at noon CDT and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
