ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team held the edge in shots and corner kicks, but an own goal proved the difference in a 1-0 loss to Northwestern on Saturday night (Oct. 8) at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan is now 10-5-5 all-time against Northwestern. The last time the Wolverines beat the Wildcats was Oct. 7, 2005, a 3-2 victory in Ann Arbor
Each team had one legitimate scoring chance in the first half, but neither found the back of the net. In the 29th minute, Northwestern midfielder Jill Dunn cracked a shot from left to right that senior/junior goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) got a hand on and subsequently bounced off the post. The ball spun around inside the box for a moment, until sophomore Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale) cleared it. In the 34th minute, senior/junior Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) had her own shot deflect off the post on the Northwestern side.
The Wildcats broke through in the second half on an own goal. Wildcats defender Nicole Jewell threw the ball in, but the ball bounced off senior midfielder Courtney Mercier (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and found the back of the Michigan net. Freshman Christina Murillo (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) had one final shot at the equalizer on a free kick right outside the 18-yard box, but her shot was saved and cleared.
Big Ten play continues next Wednesday (Oct. 12), as Michigan makes the short drive to East Lansing to take on rival Michigan State. The game will be streamed online through BTN.com and will begin at 4 p.m.
