CHICAGO, Ill. -- Freshman Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team is among 48 players invited to participate in the United States U-20 and U-18 Women's Youth National Teams Super Camp from Jan. 25-Feb. 1 in Chula Vista, Calif. The event is one of two youth national team camps announced by U.S. Soccer today (Thursday, Jan. 15) with the intention of evaluating talent for the 2010 U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany and the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago.
Stachel is no stranger to the national stage. During the summer prior to her rookie season, Stachel and Wolverine classmate Haley Kopmeyer(Troy, Mich./Lasher) set off to France and Denmark with the U.S. Women's National U-18 team under the direction of U-M assistant coach Dean Duerst. The squad edged England's U-19 national team and knocked off the Danish U-19 national team twice. Stachel is also a veteran of the U.S. Olympic Development Program, playing for the Region II team from 2005-08.
A starter in all 19 games for the Wolverines as a freshman, Stachel tallied nine points with two goals and five assists. She led the Maize and Blue in assists and was second on the team in points. On Sept. 11, she exploded for a goal and two assists against Oakland in her best statistical performance of the season.
