ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's soccer head coach Greg Ryan announced Wednesday (Feb. 1) the signings of eight prep standouts to National Letters of Intent for the 2012 season. The signees include goalkeeper Maddie Clarfield (Malibu, Calif./Malibu), midfielder Cassie Collins (San Diego, Calif./Westview), midfielder Hailey Fisher (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc), midfielder Layal "Lulu" Haidar (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood), forward Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep), midfielder Lisha Murphy (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Reitz Memorial), midfielder Christina Ordonez (Elmhurst, Ill./York), and defender Sydney Raguse (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar).

"The 2012 recruiting class includes an outstanding group of soccer players," Ryan said. "Each player is tremendously talented, extremely fast and very skillful. They will make an immediate and positive impact on our 2012 team, and will blend well with our returnees. I cannot wait to get this group together in August."

Clarfield is a goalkeeper from Malibu, Calif., who attends Malibu High School and plays club with Real So Cal. As a sophomore, Clarfield was an All-CIF first team selection, and the Frontier League Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior last year, Clarfield was a first team Tri-Valley League selection. This season, Clarfield has posted 18 shutouts in 24 matches for Real So Cal, with a goals-against average of 0.33. The team was an Elite Clubs National League Finalist last year, Coast Premier Soccer League champion in 2010 and Nike Manchester United Cup champion in 2009.

Collins is a midfielder from San Diego, Calif., who attends Westview High School and plays club with the San Diego Surf. Collins is a three-time All-CIF selection -- earning first team honors last season as a junior and helping lead Westview to CIF championships in 2009 (D-I) and 2011 (D-II). She has been named team captain for the 2012 season. Collins won two national championships while playing with the surf; the first in 2009 (on the U-15 team) and the other in 2011 (on the U-17 team).

Fisher is a midfielder from Grand Blanc, Mich., who attends Grand Blanc High School and plays club with the Michigan Hawks. She is a two-year varsity letterwinner at Grand Blanc, earning All-State honorable mention as a junior and has also received all-district and all-region nods each of the last two years. Prior to playing with the Michigan Hawks, Fisher played with Vardar '95, where she was a two-time team captain, leading her team to the state cup semifinals. Fisher attended the U.S. Soccer Federation Training Center and is also a member of the Michigan State ODP team.

Haidar is a midfielder from Dearborn Heights, Mich., who attends Crestwood High School and plays club with the Michigan Hawks. She scored a total of 57 goals last season and has been team MVP the last two years. Heading into her senior season, Haidar is a two-time MHSAA All-State selection and has also earned all-region and all-district nods, among others. She helped the Michigan Hawks to five state championships (2007-11) and two Region 2 championships. Additionally, Haidar is also a member of the Michigan State ODP Team and has been on four ODP Regional teams.

Harris is a forward from Chicago, Ill., who attends Walter Payton College Prep -- a selective college preparatory high school that takes 250 students out of 10,000 applicants -- and plays club with NSA Premier Fury. Last year, Harris scored three goals at the 2011 USYSA National Championships to help lead NSA Premier Fury to the team title and was also named to the Best 11 team. She was on the ODP Region II team from 2008-10, taking part in trips to Costa Rica (in 2009) and Holland (2010).

Murphy is a midfielder from Newburgh, Ind., who attends Evansville Reitz Memorial and plays club with the Southwest Indiana Soccer Association. Murphy, a four-year varsity letterwinner and team captain as a senior, helped lead Reitz Memorial to the 2008 IHSAA Girls Soccer state championship. Ordonez is a midfielder from Elmhurst, Ill., who attends York High School and plays club with NSA Premier Fury. At York, she set the individual career scoring record with 84 goals through three seasons, leading to three All-West Suburban Conference selections. Ordonez has been named an all-state selection the last two years. Together with fellow signee Corinne Harris, Ordonez helped lead her club team to the USYSA national championship in 2011.

Raguse is a central defender from Newport Beach, Calif., who attends Corona Del Mar High School and plays club with Legends Breakaway. She is a three-time all-league selection, earning first team honors last season, and was an All-CIF third team selection last season. Raguse's high school team, Corona Del Mar, is currently ranked as the fourth-best team in California in the ESPNHS POWERADE FAB 50, while her club team, Legends Breakaway, was a Western Regional semifinalist last season.

Q U O T E S

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On Maddie Clarfield ... "Maddie is a very technical, hard working goalkeeper. At 5-10, Maddie and Haley [Kopmeyer] are two of the tallest goalkeepers in the Big Ten, allowing them to cover all of the space in goal. We expect Maddie to come in and compete for playing time with Haley right away, and we think she's got a very bright future in front of her."

On Cassie Collins ... "Cassie is an outstanding holding midfielder who possesses great speed, skill, and ball-winning ability. She combines skill and passing accuracy in the attack with a strong ball-winning presence in the middle of the park. She'll make an immediate impact on our team."

On Hailey Fisher ... "Hailey is a quick, skillful soccer player. She may be the most versatile player in our recruiting class, as she has the ability to play anywhere in the midfield or as a striker. She will bring a lot of speed and skill to our already very fast and talented group of soccer players."

On Layal Haidar ... "Layal is one of the most skillful players in the country. She possesses great vision, passing accuracy and the ability to score from just about anywhere. In addition, Leah is a set play specialist who can both score and assist on goals with her pinpoint passing and shooting."

On Corinne Harris ... "Corinne is one of the top strikers in this recruiting class, and will make an immediate impact on our team. She's a very complete forward, as she possesses great speed, agility, skill, vision and the ability to finish her chances. Corinne is also a terrific student, which, combined with her soccer skill, makes her a perfect fit for the University of Michigan."

On Lisha Murphy ... "Lisha is a very skillful forward who can also play in the midfield. She'll provide great service from the flanks, and has the ability to set up her teammates for goals with accurate and properly weighted passes. In addition, she has an excellent shot, and has scored her share of goals over her club career."

On Christina Ordonez ... "Christina is a dynamic attacking player who possesses great skill, speed, and endurance. Her 'engine' allows her to maintain an incredibly high pace on the field. She's an accomplished goal scorer, but she is also great at setting up her teammates. She's a true two-way midfielder who can attack and defend from goal line to goal line."

On Sydney Raguse ... "Sydney is a rare central defender who is outstanding at attacking to compliment her excellent defending. Her ability to attack successfully out of the back will help us to maintain possession of the ball significantly. She's an excellent passer, and will help us open up the game with her accurate long passes."
