KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team is ranked No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Preseason Rankings, the organization announced Wednesday (Aug. 6). The Wolverines capped last season ranked as the No. 6 team in the country after finishing in a tie for second place in the Big Ten and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Michigan returns four players that started 10 or more games last season. Sophomore midfielder Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), who was U-M's second-leading scorer in 2013 (6G, 9A) and an All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection, is back to lead the squad that graduated seven seniors. Other key returners include sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield), senior defender Chloe Sosenko (South Lyon, Mich./Brighton) and junior defender Christina Ordonez (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community).
The Wolverines are one of three Big Ten Conference teams ranked in the top 25, along with Nebraska (No. 13) and Penn State (No. 24).
The Big Ten will announce its preseason coaches' poll and Players to Watch list on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
The Wolverines will travel to Western Michigan next Wednesday (Aug. 13) for their lone exhibition match of the season at 4 p.m. Michigan's season will officially get underway on Friday, Aug. 22, vs. Cal State Northridge at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
