KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team is ranked No. 19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Preseason Rankings, the organization announced Tuesday (Aug. 13). The Wolverines finished last season also ranked No. 19 after finishing third in the Big Ten and reaching the third round of the NCAA Championships.
Michigan brings back 10 players that started at least 10 matches last season, including seven seniors. Five All-Big Ten selections are back, beginning with senior forward Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville), who enters the 2013 season only 10 goals shy of becoming the program's all-time leading goal scorer. Other returnees include senior defenders Holly Hein (Castaic, Calif./West Ranch) and Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas), senior midfielder Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) and sophomore forward Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep).
The Wolverines are one of three ranked teams from the Big Ten Conference, behind Penn State (No. 4) and ahead of Ohio State (No. 23). They will face three opponents who are ranked in the preseason top 25, including Penn State (Oct. 13), No. 11 San Diego State (Sept. 1) and Ohio State (Nov. 2).
The Big Ten will announce its preseason coaches poll and Players to Watch list on Wednesday (Aug. 14).
Michigan hosts Western Michigan today at 3 p.m. in the first of two exhibition contests this week. The Wolverines officially open the season on Friday, Aug. 23, vs. UW-Milwaukee at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
