TOKYO, Japan -- A trio of University of Michigan women's soccer players recently wrapped up competition at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Japan. Sophomore Christina Murillo (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) played with Mexico, which reached the knockout stage of the tournament before being eliminated by Nigeria, 1-0, on Thursday (Aug. 30). Juniors Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) and Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) played for Canada, which was eliminated from the event by Korea DPR on Monday (Aug. 27) in the group stage.
Murillo started all four matches for Mexico on defense. Ezurike played in two matches for Canada, starting one and coming off the bench in the other. Zadorsky, the captain of the Canadian U-20 squad, scored on a penalty kick in the team's opening match against Argentina, and started all three matches on defense.
The trio of players will return to U-M's active roster. The Wolverines open their road slate Thursday (Aug. 30) against Cal State Northridge in Northridge, Calif.
Sunday, Aug. 19, vs. Japan (L, 4-1)
Murillo started on defense and played all 90 minutes, but Mexico lost to host Japan, 4-1, in the opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. [ Video Highlights | Photo Gallery | Match Summary ]
Wednesday, Aug. 22, vs. Switzerland (W, 2-0)
Murillo started on defense and played the entire match, helping Mexico earn a much-needed shutout win over Switzerland, 2-0. [ Video Highlights | Photo Gallery | Match Summary ]
Sunday, Aug. 26, vs. New Zealand (W, 4-0)
Murillo started on defense for the third-straight match, helping the Mexicans shut out New Zealand. After a scoreless first period, Mexico scored four unanswered goals in the second to earn the win. [ Video Highlights | Photo Gallery | Match Summary ]
Thursday, Aug. 30, vs. Nigeria (L, 1-0, ET)
Murillo started on defense and played the entire match, but Mexico was eliminated by Nigeria, 1-0, after an extra-time goal in the 109th minute. Murillo picked up a yellow card in the contest. [ Video Highlights | Photo Gallery | Match Summary ]
Monday, Aug. 20, vs. Argentina (W, 6-0)
Zadorsky started on defense and scored the team's first goal on a penalty kick in the seventh minute as Canada cruised to a 6-0 win over Argentina. She is the captain of the Canadian squad. Ezurike did not play in the match. [ Video Highlights | Photo Gallery | Match Summary ]
Thursday, Aug. 23 -- vs. Norway (L, 2-1)
Ezurike and Zadorsky both started the match, but Norway rallied to defeat Canada, 2-1. Ezurike was subbed out in the 46th minute of the match. [ Video Highlights | Photo Gallery | Match Summary ]
Monday, Aug. 27 -- vs. Korea DPR (L, 2-1)
Zadorsky started on defense in the match, while Ezurike came on as a substitute in the 56th minute. Canada led 1-0 after scoring a goal in the 12th minute, but Korea DPR tied the match in the 33rd minute, and scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute, providing the winning margin.
