The University of Michigan women's soccer team (1-1-0) welcomes in three teams for the Michigan Invitational this weekend, to be held at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The event kicks off with two matches on Friday (Aug. 26), first Michigan State and DePaul at 4:30 p.m., followed by Michigan and Duquesne at 7 p.m. On Sunday (Aug. 28), Michigan State will take on Duquesne at noon, with Michigan and DePaul on deck at 2:30 p.m.
First Time Opponents ... The Wolverines have never faced either DePaul or Duquesne, their opponents this weekend.
Weekend Recap ... The Wolverines opened the 2011 season with a pair of home games at the U-M Soccer Stadium last weekend, falling to Akron, 1-0, but coming back two days later to beat Oakland, 3-1. Sophomore forward Nkem Ezurike scored two goals against Oakland, with sophomore Tori McCombs netting the other. Redshirt junior Haley Kopmeyer had nine saves in goal on the weekend. Sophomore Scorers ... Sophomores Tori McCombs and Nkem Ezurike accounted for all the goal-scoring for U-M in the opening weekend, marking the second straight season the two have scored all Wolverine goals during the season's first weekend. In 2010, McCombs netted two and Ezurike one in the season opener, a 3-1 win over Detroit, followed by Ezurike scoring the only marker in U-M's 1-1 tie with Eastern Michigan in game two.
Collegiate Debuts ... Five true freshmen made their collegiate debuts over the weekend. Christina Murillo started both contests in the midfield, while Chloe Sosenko, Kate Maguigan, Olivia Buechler, and Jen Pace all saw time off the bench. Sosenko recorded an assist on Ezurike's second goal against Oakland last Sunday.
Preseason Poll ... The Big Ten released its preseason coaches' poll and Players to Watch on Tuesday (Aug. 16). The Wolverines were picked to finish fifth in the conference, and had three players on the Watch List -- Nkem Ezurike, Meghan Toohey, and Christina Murillo. [ Complete Poll ]
Introducing the Captains ... Four U-M student-athletes will rep the yellow armband this season - seniors Kristen Goncalves, Courtney Mercier, and redshirt juniors Haley Kopmeyer and Clare Stachel. All four players were part of the first freshman class to play under Ryan.
Set Your Sets ... Two of Michigan's matches will be shown live on the Big Ten Network this season -- Sept. 18 at Indiana and Oct. 23 against Penn State. Both matches are at noon. In addition, the Big Ten Network will also show the two semifinal matches and championship match of the 2011 Big Ten Tournament. [ Full Schedule ]
