The University of Michigan women's soccer team (5-2-3, 0-1-1 Big Ten) returns home for a Big Ten showdown with Michigan State (7-3-1, 2-1-0 Big Ten) on Saturday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. inside the U-M Soccer Stadium. Since 1999, the home team in the Michigan/Michigan State rivalry is undefeated, going 6-0-5. Michigan, which went 3-0-2 during that span at the Michigan Soccer Field, will welcome MSU to the three-year old U-M Soccer Complex for the first time.
The last three meetings between the Wolverines and Spartans have resulted in ties, including last year's scoreless affair. Senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) is the lone Wolverine with a goal against MSU -- scoring in 2007 and 2008 -- while junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) is yet to allow a Spartan to find the back of the net, posting a clean slate in the 2009 meeting.
OT Inevitable -- Since the very first Michigan-Michigan State battle on Oct. 21, 1994, overtime has been the norm between the evenly matched programs. In 18 all-time meetings, including the inaugural match-up, half of the contests have gone to overtime. The teams have ended in deadlock six times, with the Wolverines taking one game and the Spartans winning two.
Paint the State Maize and Blue -- The Wolverines will get another chance to improve their record against teams from the state of Michigan this weekend against Michigan State. U-M is 7-0-4 against Great Lakes foes under third-year head coach Greg Ryan.
On the Big Ten Radar -- Nkem Ezurike collected her sixth goal of the season against Northwestern (Oct. 2) but slid to a tie for third in Big Ten scoring. Tori McCombs remains ranked 10th in the league in scoring as one of eight Big Ten players to score four goals. Senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) is tied for second in the conference in assists with four. Ezurike also sits in fifth with 13 points. [ Complete Big Ten Statistics ]
Quick Hits -- Michigan's contest against Purdue on Oct. 14 is the first of two U-M games on BigTenNetwork.com. The contest will be streamed live online and air on the Big Ten Network the following day at 4 p.m. ... The Big Ten Network is scheduled to televise Michigan's home game against Illinois (Oct. 31, 3 p.m.) and away contest with Penn State (Nov. 7, 1 p.m.) live in high definition.
