The Yellow Armband: Team Effort, Team Win
Holly Hein

Oct. 17, 2013

Every week throughout the 2013 season, captains Nkem Ezurike, Holly Hein, Meghan Toohey and Shelina Zadorsky will give the public an inside look at the University of Michigan women's soccer team through this blog, The Yellow Armband. In this week's entry, Hein writes about the team's most recent victory at Penn State.

Hello again everyone,

I'm happy to be writing to you after a big weekend for our team. We faced an extremely tough Penn State team on the road last Sunday in a match that always proves to be a battle. This installment of the series was no different as we traded chances with the Nittany Lions for 67 minutes before breaking the scoreless draw. A beautiful goal by Tori McCombs proved to be the difference in earning our program's first ever win at State College.

Winning our Big Ten matchup against Penn State this year was a truly amazing feeling for our team after finishing last year with two disheartening draws, one of which ended our NCAA Tournament run. This win wasn't just for our current squad, but for a generation of players that laid the foundation for us. They helped us win that match and move us closer to a potential Big Ten championship.

We could not have won that match without an incredible team effort. Our entire squad was contributing on defense to keep a powerful Penn State offense at bay. Everyone was pitching in; from Nkem Ezurike, who made numerous plays on the both sides of the ball all the way back to Taylor Bucklin, whose fantastic effort in the net led to her being named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. That victory was made even sweeter by a huge Michigan contingent in attendance who we were able to sing a rousing chorus of "The Victors" with after the game.

Despite this historic win, we have to stay focused on our season-long goal of winning a Big Ten championship. We must continue to take the rest of the season one match at a time. We have a big game against a tough Indiana team on Friday that we are all excited for. Following that, we have our annual Pink Game in support of breast cancer awareness on Sunday against Purdue. We hope to see you out there. We'll be wearing pink shorts and would love to see you sporting pink Michigan gear, as well!

Thanks again to our fantastic fans that made it over to State College and that have been supporting us in Ann Arbor. We're excited to chase our first Big Ten championship with you!

As always, GO BLUE!

- Holly
