The Yellow Armband: Back at the Big Ten Tournament
Clare Stachel

Nov. 1, 2012

Periodically throughout the 2012 season, tri-captains Holly Hein, Haley Kopmeyer and Clare Stachel will provide an inside look at the University of Michigan women's soccer team through this blog, The Yellow Armband. In this entry, Stachel reflects on Senior Day festivities and the unconventional cold tub treatment after Wednesday's Big Ten Tournament win over Wisconsin.

This Yellow Armband is reporting live from Bloomington, Ind.!

First, going back to last week, there is a large "thank you" due to the whole junior class. We have a tradition on our team that the junior class decorates the locker room and specifically the seniors' lockers for Senior Day. Past that point, it is up to the juniors to decide how much, or little, they want to decorate. Now, I may be biased, but this year's junior class went above and beyond anything I have ever seen before. I don't mean to get all sappy but I think I can speak for Holly, Haley and Emily when I say that we were truly touched and really felt like a family on that day.

After finishing the regular season, we have officially started the Big Ten Tournament! We arrived in Bloomington on Tuesday night and checked into our hotel/resort on Lake Monroe. The lake turned out to be quite helpful to our team but more to come on that later. As we prepared for our match against Wisconsin, there was definitely something different in the air. It was great to see that drive and passion in every single person on the team and even better to have that 2-0 win to send us off to the next round against Ohio State.

So far, one of the most memorable parts of the trip was our "cold tub" after the game. Instead of filling up the bathtub with ice and cold water, we decided it would be easier to go sit in the lake. So, Haley, Tori and I made our way down to the muddy banks and with screams and squirms slowly made our way into waist-deep water. None of us were as brave as Holly, who completely submerged herself underwater and proceeded to scare people in the pitch black night. Needless to say, we all took showers and scrubbed off the muddy water afterwards.

So far it has been a great tournament but we still have more work to do! You can watch us play Ohio State on the Big Ten Network on Friday at 12:30 p.m.

Thanks for reading. Go Blue!
