Chavez Named to NSCAA All-Great Lakes Third Team

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Senior forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team has been selected to the All-Great Lakes Region third team, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Thursday (Dec. 11). Chavez is fresh off a stellar 2003 campaign in which she collected a team-best 15 points and tied for the team lead in goals with six.

Chavez, who started 24 of 25 games this year, was a major offensive threat on the frontline all season for the Wolverines. She also led the squad in shots (48) and shots on goal (21) and was tied for second on the team in assists with three. Chavez finished her four-year Michigan career with 23 goals and 13 assists in 85 games. Her 59 career points tie her for seventh place on U-M's all-time points list.

Three of Michigan's biggest goals in 2003 came off the foot of Chavez. She scored the game-winner in a 1-0 upset over then No. 4-ranked Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (Nov. 16) after netting the final goal in a 3-2 win over the then No. 2-ranked Irish in the regular-season finale (Oct. 29). On Oct. 24, Chavez notched the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Michigan State and assure U-M a spot in the Big Ten Tournament.

It marks Chavez's first career regional accolade from the NSCAA. In 2000, she was named to the Soccer Buzz Great Lakes All-Freshman team after finishing the season with eight goals and six assists for 22 points.
