TAMPA, Fla. -- A two-out bloop single in the bottom of the sixth inning was the deciding run in the 15th-ranked University of Michigan softball team's 3-2 loss at No. 12 South Florida today (Saturday, Feb. 9) at the USF Tournament held at the USF Softball Stadium.
Sophomore Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) gave up just six hits in six innings and three runs -- one of them unearned. Driesenga struck out three and walked none, including retiring eight straight batters from the second inning into the fourth. Following a USF single in the fourth, she began another streak of six straight batters that carried into the sixth inning.
Freshman Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) got the Wolverines on the board in the first. Junior leadoff hitter Lyndsay Doyle (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) walked on a full count and then stole second. A batter later, Romero hit a 2-2 pitch deep over the wall in leftfield. It is the second home run on the season for her (and second of the day), and she now has eight runs batted in.
The Bulls came up with an equalizer in their half of the first. Despite only hitting one ball out of the infield, they pushed two runs across the plate.
The Wolverine bats stayed quiet the rest of the game. They were retired in order save for a Romero walk in the fourth.
With two outs in the sixth, a USF double put the winning run on second base, before a bloop single into right field scored the deciding run.
The Bulls used two pitchers to retire the Wolverines in order in the top of the seventh. On the day, the Maize and Blue collected two runs on one hit and committed one error. Driesenga's record moves to 2-1 on the season.
Michigan wraps up its appearance in the USF Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 9) against Samford at 9 a.m. in Tampa, Fla.
