LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, freshman catcher Lauren Sweet (Corona, Calif./Santiago) was hit by a pitch to walk in the winning run as the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan softball team defeated Temple, 4-3, in the finale of the Citrus Classic on Sunday afternoon (March 4) at the ESPN Diamondplex.
Freshman RHP Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning but was lifted in the sixth after pitching 5.1 innings while giving up three runs on three hits and striking out three. Freshman LHP Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modena) picked up the win in relief, hurling 1.2 innings of shutout ball while striking out four without allowing a hit. The Wolverines totaled 10 hits on the afternoon, led by Sweet's 3-for-3 performance, with senior third baseman Stephanie Kirkpatrick (Plainfield, Ill./Central) and sophomore outfielder Lyndsay Doyle (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) each recording two base hits.
Junior second baseman Ashley Lane (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) led off the second with a single that just dropped in front of the rightfielder, advancing to third on Sweet's double to the wall in left-center. Lane crossed home when Kirkpatrick singled through the left side, moving Sweet to third as Michigan took a 1-0 lead. The Temple catcher attempted to throw Kirkpatrick out as she stole second, but the throw sailed into centerfield, allowing Sweet to go home from third for a 2-0 Wolverine advantage.
With Temple getting a run back in the third on two Michigan errors, U-M plated another run in the fourth on the strength of three singles. After back-to-back base knocks by Sweet and Kirkpatrick, sophomore designated player Mandy Gardner (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third. Doyle singled up the middle to score Sweet as Michigan's lead increased to 3-1.
Temple tied it up at 3-3 in the sixth with a two-run shot to right-center, prompting a pitching change for Michigan with one out. Wagner got the next batter to foul out and ended the inning with a strikeout.
Moving to the seventh, Wagner struck out the side to bring up the top of the order for Michigan in the bottom half. Following a groundout, sophomore outfielder Nicole Sappingfield (Norco, Calif./Norco) reached on an error by the third baseman. Senior first baseman Amanda Chidester (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) doubled to right -center and Lane was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out for Sweet. Facing a full count, Sweet was hit by the pitch to score Sappingfield and give Michigan the walk-off win.
Michigan returns to action next Saturday (March 10), traveling to Louisville for a date with the Cardinals at 1 p.m. U-M will also play Saint Louis at 3 p.m. Saturday and take on Illinois State on Sunday (March 11) at 11 a.m.
