FULLERTON, Calif. --The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 5 Arizona State on Friday (March 16) in the Judi Garman Classic at the Titan Softball Complex. Senior first baseman Amanda Chidester (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) hit a shot towards the wall in centerfield in the seventh inning, but ASU's centerfielder made an over-the-wall catch to keep Michigan off the board.
Freshman LHP Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modena) went the distance, giving up one run on four hits and striking out two. Michigan managed two hits on offense, coming from sophomore outfielder Lyndsay Doyle (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) and junior second baseman Ashley Lane (Escondido, Calif./Escondido).
Arizona State broke up a scoreless game with a home run to centerfield in the sixth inning for a 1-0 lead.
Leading off the seventh, Chidester drove the ball to centerfield and appeared to have a home run. Arizona State's Elizabeth Caporuscio leapt and with an arm over the wall, snagged the ball to rob Chidester of the round tripper. With one out, Lane blooped a single over the first baseman's head that stayed just fair to give Michigan its third baserunner of the contest. Senior third baseman Stephanie Kirkpatrick (Plainfield, Ill./Central) flied out to center and sophomore pinch hitter Taylor Hasselbach (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) flied out to left for U-M's second and third outs of the final inning.
The Wolverines wrap up the tournament tomorrow (Saturday, March 17) with a pair of games, taking on Virginia at 9 a.m. PDT and No. 24 DePaul at 1 p.m. PDT.
