Michigan Head Coach Carol Hutchins
On her message before tonight's game ... "I told them before the game, we played Arizona State in the same exact game last year. 0-0 game, sixth-inning home run by us and we win 1-0. The thing is, they went on to become the national champions last year. Now this year after we lose the same way to them (last weekend), what are we going to become? We need to stop living in the past like we have and getting caught up in what we haven't done. We need to focus on what we are going to become."
On tonight's offensive outburst ... "We talked about getting bases and having good, long at-bats. Make the pitcher throw it over the plate and see the ball longer. Once one or two people did that, it becomes contagious. It takes the pressure off. I thought our kids up and down the order did a great job of that. Look at Lauren Sweet, drawing a walk and then getting a big hit later in the game. That is big stuff. I also told them that this is a team effort. We keep having individuals who keep trying to do it all and be the one. We don't need a hero, we need a team. I think we have that team; we just need to keep getting better."
On what she liked most tonight ... "Having baserunners was my favorite part of the game tonight. Chiddy (Amanda Chidester) doesn't hit a grand slam without runners on base. You know the best thing about Sara's (Driesenga) home run? KP (Stephanie Kirkpatrick) was on base. That was fantastic. I thought Sara came in and did a great job pitching. She finished her pitches well. She has worked really hard this season. She has had to work through some adversity. Once you get through that adversity, it starts to empower you."
