ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A six-run first inning and nine two-out runs propelled the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan softball team to a 9-1, five inning win over Bowling Green today (Wednesday, March 27) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.

Freshman Kelsey Susalla (Garden City, Mich./Garden City) made just her sixth start of the season at first base and came through with two big hits to lead the offense with four runs batted in.

In the first inning with two outs, Susalla smacked a double into rightfield, scoring two runs. She came around to score on a base hit from senior Jaclyn Crummey (Macomb, Mich./Dakota),which gave U-M a 6-0 lead after the first inning. For the game, the Wolverines batted .500 (5-for-10) with two down.

The Maize and Blue secured a run-rule victory with three more runs, scoring two in the second and one in the fourth. With the bases loaded in the second, freshman Sierra Lawrence (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) and Susalla drew back-to-back walks to bring in a pair of runs.

In the fourth inning, Susalla's single into centerfield scored the ninth U-M run and presented the possibility of a run-rule decision (an eight-run lead after five innings).

Sophomore Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) got the last two outs of the game on swinging strikeouts. She pitched two innings and yielded one run on two hits. Fellow sophomore Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modena) started the game and pitched three innings for her sixth win of the season. She struck out five Falcons and walked none.

The Wolverines head out for their first Big Ten road series on this weekend. The series begins Friday (March 29) against Penn State at 6 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Softball Park in State College, Pa.
