ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta) belted a first-inning home run to give the No. 12 University of Michigan softball team an early lead that it never relinquished on the way to a 5-1 win over Ohio State today (Friday, April 5) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.

Michigan extended its win streak to 11 games, its longest since 2011 (24 straight wins). The Wolverines pushed their win steak to open Big Ten Conference play to seven games, their best start since 2010 (13 wins).

Romero added two more runs batted in with her second hit of the game in the second inning. The Wolverines took advantage of three walks issued by OSU pitchers in that frame: all three came around to score. Romero plated two and senior Ashley Lane (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) singled in U-M's fifth run.

Sophomore Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modena) got the start in the circle and started the game with two strikeouts. She did not set down another Buckeye via the strikeout until the sixth, and added one more in the seventh for total of four.

The southpaw scatted six hits and yielded just one run. She earned her ninth win of the season and threw her fourth complete game.

U-M's defense turned some fine plays behind Wagner, including a 5-4-3 double play in the third to erase OSU's first base hit. In the fifth inning freshman Sierra Lawrence (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) threw a runner out at the plate trying to score from second.

The Maize and Blue return to action on Saturday (April 6) against Ohio State at the Wilpon Complex at 2 p.m.
