ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Ashley Lane (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) and freshman Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) each blasted a pair of home runs, and sophomore Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modeno) tossed the second consecutive shutout for the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team in an 11-0, five-inning win over Central Michigan today (Tuesday, April 23) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Three of the first four U-M batters reached in the first inning, and Lane quickly unloaded the bases, clobbering a 2-2 pitch deep over the leftfield wall for her 13th homer of the season.
In the second inning, Romero popped a three-run homer down the leftfield line into the CMU bullpen, giving Michigan a seven-run lead.
As soon as Romero touched home, the umpires whisked the players off the field, and both teams sat through a 59-minute rain delay.
Once play restarted in the third, Wagner yielded the only two Chippewa hits of the game. Wagner threw 46 of 63 offerings for strikes and fanned six total.
Romero and Lane each hit two-run round-trippers in the fourth inning, accounting for all of Michigan's 11 runs batted in for the night. Romero's second homer was her 21st of the season, tying a U-M single-season record.
Wagner finished off CMU in the top of the fifth, securing U-M's 18th run-rule victory of the season and 22nd win in a row. The win is the 16th of the season for the southpaw.
The Wolverines head out on the road for a three-game series beginning Friday (April 26) against Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
