CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan softball team was overwhelmed by a 14-hit attack by the Illinois Fighting Illini and several defensive miscues that led to a 10-2 defeat in six innings Friday (April 25) at Eichelberger Field.

Michigan scored first but could not overcome Illinois' offensive display. The Maize and Blue loaded the bases in the top of the second with no outs but could only push one run across. Junior Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) worked a walk after falling behind 1-2, forcing in the game's first run.

In the Illinois half of the third, the first four Fighting Illini hitters reached on three hits and a U-M error. Three runs came around to score, and Illinois took a 3-1 lead.

U-M scratched out one run on a bounce out in the top of the fourth cutting into the lead 3-2. But the Fighting Illini piled on seven more runs, answering with three in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Four two-out hits in the bottom of the fourth led to Illinois' three runs. Three doubles in the sixth led to the run-rule decision.

Sophomore Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) and junior Lauren Sweet (Corona, Calif./Santiago) had two hits apiece.

The Wolverines and Fighting Illini will complete the series Saturday (April 26) with a doubleheader in Champaign, Ill. Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CDT. The game originally scheduled for Sunday (April 27) will now be played at immediately following the 1 p.m. game due to an inclement weather forecast.
