ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan softball team registered a pair of grand slams to power past Washtenaw County rival Eastern Michigan, 11-1, in five innings on Wednesday evening (May 5) in front of 1,146 fans at the Wilpon Softball Complex, home of Alumni Field.

Junior first baseman Dorian Shaw (Burke, Va./Robinson SS) and senior third baseman Maggie Viefhaus (Eureka, Mo./Eureka HS) kept pace in the home-run race, each tallying her 17th of the season with grand slams in the first and third innings, respectively. Viefhaus' shot was part of a 2-for-2, five-RBI effort.

For the second straight game, junior LHP Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS) earned the victory in relief, striking out four while allowing just one hit and a walk through 2.1 innings. The decision improved Nemitz's record to 18-3 on the season.

After sacrificing the initial lead in the top of the first, the Wolverines took advantage of a series of EMU miscues to quickly pull away, scoring six runs on just a pair of hits through the opening two frames. After U-M loaded the bases on back-to-back errors and a walk, Shaw picked up her team's first hit with one down in the first, hammering a full-count, line-drive grand slam over the wall in straightaway centerfield.

The Wolverines remained hot at the plate to begin the second inning, getting the first two batters on base before Viefhaus knocked an RBI single to rightfield. With a runner on third, senior catcher Roya St. Clair (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) popped a sacrifice fly to rightfield, allowing senior rightfielder Angela Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) to tag up and score from third.

After two walks and another EMU error to start the third inning, senior centerfielder Molly Bausher (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) slapped an RBI single up the middle. With the bases loaded for Viefhaus, the U-M captain took a 2-1 pitch and launched it into the rightfield grandstand to cap the five-run inning and round out scoring in the contest.

Eastern Michigan manufactured its run off of three hits in the first. With third baseman Jessica Richards occupying second after a single and subsequent stolen base, EMU catcher Sarah Gerber drove her in with a double to right centerfield. Freshman RHP Stephanie Speierman (Columbia, Md./Hammond HS) struck out five and allowed four hits and a pair of walks through 2.2 innings.

U-M will host its final regular-season home game on Saturday (May 8), welcoming intrastate rival Michigan State for a 7 p.m. contest at the Wilpon Softball Complex, home of Alumni Field. The Maize and Blue will be clad in pink uniforms for its Pink Game, held in conjunction with Friday's inaugural Michigan Softball Academy.
