LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 6 University of Michigan softball team held off Ohio State after weathering a two-run seventh inning for a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament held at Bowlin Stadium on Friday (May 10).

Ohio State put runners on in every inning but starting pitcher sophomore Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) managed to work out of the first six without allowing a run. The Buckeyes plated a pair of runs in the seventh on two hits and a U-M error. With two on and two out, Michigan went to the bullpen and sophomore Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modeno) retired the only batter she faced on a fly out to left, ending the game.

In all, the Buckeyes left 10 runners on base. Driesenga finished with four strikeouts and 12 groundball outs in six and two-thirds innings. The righthander earned her 26th win of the season, tying four other U-M pitchers with the eighth best single-season tally in program history.

Following a Caitlin Blanchard (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield) double in the fifth, senior Ashley Lane (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) bombed a two-run homer -- her 16th of the season -- out to right. It bounced off the foul pole and back into the field of play so Lane legged out a double until she saw the umpire signaling for the home run.

The Wolverines put the first run on the board with a string of three two-out hits in the bottom of the second. Junior Nicole Sappingfield (Norco, Calif./Norco) knocked in senior Amy Knapp (St. Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore) with a slap hit into left to break the scoreless tie.

Michigan advances to the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament tomorrow (May 11) against Wisconsin at 2 p.m. CDT. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
