ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Amy Knapp (St. Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore), senior Jaclyn Crummey (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) and junior Nicole Sappingfield (Norco, Calif./Norco) will serve as team captains for the defending Big Ten champion University of Michigan softball team during the 2013 season. Their teammates and coaches selected the trio to lead through a team vote.
Knapp enters the 2013 season with 113 career starts, playing the bulk of her time at shortstop. She has also played second base and third base in her career. In 2012, Knapp registered career highs in batting average (.245), home runs (4), hits (36) and doubles (9). She had nine multi-hit games and six with multiple runs batted in for Michigan last season, including a 2-for-3 day against Kentucky in the NCAA Regional.
Crummey has appeared in 111 career games and was honored by the team with the Maize and Blue Award in 2012. The coaches give the Maize and Blue Award to the player who demonstrates selflessness, spirit and hustle that cannot be quantified in a boxscore. Crummey has led the team in stolen bases each of the past two seasons, swiping eight in 2012 and 10 in 2011.
Sappingfield continues the tradition of junior class leadership that includes recent standouts like Amanda Chidester, Angela Findlay and Alessandra Giampaolo, who were all selected captains in their third year. Sappingfield enters this season with 111 career starts in leftfield. Last season, she was chosen as an All-Big Ten second team selection and made the Academic All-Big Ten team. Her 58 hits last season were third best on the team and her .317 average was fourth best. She also had a .982 fielding percentage. During her freshman season, she was an All-Big Ten first team performer.
U-M has 55 games on its schedule and will also play in the Big Ten Tournament in Lincoln, Neb., the first time the tournament has been held since 2008.
Michigan opens its 2013 season Friday, Feb. 8, against Marshall at the University of South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
