OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Junior Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) and sophomore Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) of the University of Michigan softball team (No. 4 ESPN.com/USA Softball, No. 5 USA Today/NFCA) were selected to the 2014 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Preseason Watch List Wednesday (Jan. 29), as announced by ASA/USA Softball.
Fifty players in all appear on the watch list, with Driesenga one of 20 juniors selected and Romero one of six sophomores. [ Complete List ]
Driesenga earned NFCA All-Great Lakes Region second team honors along with All-Big Ten first team honors in 2013. She posted a 31-9 record with an earned-run average of 1.89 during her sophomore season. The righty set a U-M single-season record with 54 appearances, including 41 starts, which tied a Michigan record. She struck out nearly a batter an inning, finishing with 247 strikeouts in 263.1 innings. Driesenga earned the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week on March 19, for beating three ranked teams at the Judi Garman Classic.
Romero was named to the NFCA All-America third team and became just the second player in Big Ten history to win both Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in 2013 (Sara Griffin, U-M 1995). Her play earned a spot on the USA Softball Player of the Year Top Finalist ballot. She rewrote Michigan's record book, belting 23 home runs -- a new single-season standard. Romero also led the Wolverines with a .379 batting average and 71 runs batted in. The Big Ten honored her with Player of the Week twice and Freshman of the Week seven times.
The top 25 finalists for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 9. The top 10 finalists will be announced May 7 and the top 3 finalists will be announced May 21. On May 27, prior to the start of the 2014 NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City, Okla., the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed.
The Wolverines open the 2014 season with a doubleheader against No. 4 Florida and No. 25 USF on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Tampa, Fla.
