OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Sophomore pitcher Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modena) of the University of Michigan softball team (No. 13 ESPN.com/USA Softball, No 15. USA Today/NFCA) was selected the 2013 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year preseason watch list, ASA/USA Softball announced on Friday (Feb. 1). Wagner is just one of eight sophomores across the country tabbed for the list.
Wagner collected both the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year awards for her play in 2012. She became just the second player in conference history to earn both honors in the same year, joining U-M's Kelly Kovach (1992-95).
Last season, Wagner led the Wolverines in the circle with a 32-7 record, 1.53 ERA, 28 complete games and 159 strikeouts. She set a Maize and Blue single-season record with 50 appearances, and her career .821 winning percentage is currently third all-time in Wolverines history.
Wagner also hit four home runs and collected 15 runs batted in. All four of her home runs provided the winning run and came in games that she earned the win in the circle.
The top 25 finalists for the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 10. The 10 finalists will be announced May 8 and the three finalists will be announced May 22.
