PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Shortstop Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) of the University of Michigan softball team is the recipient of the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week award of 2013, the conference office announced today (Monday, Feb. 11).
Romero batted .364 with two home runs -- including a grand slam -- and nine runs batted in during the four-game opening weekend, helping Michigan to a 3-1 start. Her bases-clearing blast helped key a 10-run inning for the Wolverines in a win against Florida Atlantic (Feb. 9). In all she collected four hits, one double, two walks and three runs scored.
Romero's nine RBI are good for a second-place tie among Big Ten players. She also compiled a 1.462 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging). The freshman started all four games at shortstop and batted third in head coach Carol Hutchins' lineup. She piled up 16 assists and five putouts in the field.
Romero is the first Wolverine to earn this weekly distinction since Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) on April 16, 2012.
The Wolverines (No. 15 USA Today/NFCA, No. 13 ESPN/USA Softball) will return to action this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 16-17) in the FAU Kickoff Classic against Toledo, LIU-Brooklyn, Maryland and Massachusetts.
