PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conferenced named University of Michigan softball freshman Megan Betsa (McDonough, Ga./Union Grove) its Freshman of the Week today (Monday, Feb. 24) on the strength of 12.0 scoreless innings pitched and a pair of victories at the FAU Invitational. This marks the second consecutive weekly award for Betsa, who won Freshman of the Week in week two of the season (Feb. 18).
The right-handed pitcher dominated Pittsburgh (Feb. 21) and Florida Atlantic (Feb. 23) to earn two wins in her two weekend starts. She held the Panthers and the Owls scoreless over 12 innings, hurling two complete games.
In each of her starts, Betsa yielded just three hits. Against FAU, all three hits were singles and only one reached the outfield. Opponents batted just .150 against her. She also limited the free passes, with one walk and a hit batter against Pitt and one walk against FAU.
The freshman also kept the opposition off the basepaths via the strikeout. She set down four vs. Pitt and 11 vs. FAU -- the second time in five career starts Betsa has reached double-digit strikeouts (13 vs. Central Arkansas, Feb. 15).
The two victories pushed Betsa's record to 5-0 in her debut season and lowered her earned-run average to 0.87. She is averaging better than a strike out per inning (1.34), with 43 punchouts in 32.1 innings pitched.
The Wolverines have now won the first three Freshman of the Week citations of 2014, following Abby Ramirez's (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) opening week honor on Feb. 10.
The Maize and Blue will play a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 28, against Nevada and UCLA at the first day of the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. First pitch against Nevada is slated for 2 p.m. PST.
