ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced Monday (March 24) that junior Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modeno) of the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan softball team earned league honors as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for a pair of shutdown performances against Indiana (March 21-22). This is the second Pitcher of the Week award for Wagner in the last three weeks and the seventh weekly award of her career.
The southpaw started the home and Big Ten opener for the Wolverines on Friday (March 21) and tossed 6.0 innings of scoreless ball. She scattered six hits and did not walk a batter in the 8-0 shutout, earning her 14th win of the season.
Wagner also provided a jolt to the offense. She hit a two-run homer in the third inning -- her first of the season -- and picked up another hit and a run, finishing the day 2-for-2 with a walk.
The next day (Saturday, March 22), Wagner came on in relief in the second inning against the Hoosiers. With U-M down 3-0, she steadied the defense and pitched the final 5.0 innings without yielding a run. She gave up four hits, one walk and struck out one. Michigan came back to win 12-3 in six innings, and Wagner earned her 15th win and her fourth in relief.
For the weekend, the lefty hurled 11.0 innings without surrendering a run. She helped U-M to a three-game sweep of the Hoosiers in the first home weekend of the season. Wagner is now 15-0 with a conference-best 0.81 earned run average. She is the only pitcher in the league with an ERA below 1.00.
The Wolverines have now won seven Big Ten weekly honors in the season's first seven weeks. The only week the squad did not win an award, U-M had four games rained out.
Player of the Week: Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) Feb. 10; Taylor Hasselbach (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) March 18
