PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Freshman shortstop Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) of the No. 14 University of Michigan softball team was honored as the Big Ten Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week today (Monday, March 25). This is the third and fourth honor of the season for Romero, having been named the Freshman of the Week twice (Feb. 11, March 4).
During a three-game series with Purdue over the weekend (March 22-23), Romero reached base in all 12 of her plate appearances. She batted 1.000 (7-for-7) and hit three home runs, including two in game one of the series (Friday, March 22). She also collected a career-high five runs batted in during game one, and knocked in seven overall. Romero slugged 2.286 while helping the Wolverines sweep the Boilermakers.
In game three, the Boilermakers chose to walk Romero with two on and force the potential game-winning run to third rather than pitch to her. The next batter, junior Caitlin Blanchard (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield) won the game for the Maize and Blue with a base hit.
On the season Romero is batting a team-best .400 and leads U-M in home runs (11), RBI (33), hits (40), runs (31), slugging (.840), on-base percentage (.487) and doubles (7). She is currently tops among Big Ten players in total bases (84) and runs, and ranks second in home runs, RBI and slugging.
This is the first Big Ten Player of the Week honor for a Wolverine since 2011 (Amanda Chidester May 16, 2011). Romero has now been honored as Freshman of the Week three times. Sophomore Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) earned conference recognition earlier this season as Pitcher of the Week (March 18).
The Maize and Blue next play a non-conference game on Wednesday (March 27) against Bowling Green at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex.
