PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Freshman shortstop Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) of the No. 14 University of Michigan softball team earned Big Ten Conference honors today (Monday, April 1), after being named the Freshman of the Week for the second week in a row. Romero has now taken home the conference award four out of eight weeks this season (Feb. 11, March 4, March 25).
Romero helped Michigan win all four games it played in the past week. She had a hit in each game, highlighted by her two home run performance against Penn State in game one of a doubleheader on March 30. She hit another home run in game two.
For the week Romero batted .357 (.364 in Big Ten games), knocked in five runs and scored seven times. She was also perfect in the field on 14 chances (nine putouts and five assists).
Among Big Ten players Romero ranks first in runs scored (38), total bases (98) and is tied for first with 14 home runs. She ranks second in slugging (.860) and runs batted in (37), and is sixth in on-base percentage (.485).
Last week, Romero was also honored as the Big Ten's Player of the Week (March 25).
The Wolverines begin a six-game homestand tomorrow (April 2) with a single non-conference game against Western Michigan at the Wilpon Complex at 4 p.m.
