PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Freshman shortstop Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) of the University of Michigan softball team earned a pair of Big Ten Conference honors today (Monday, April 8) as the Player of the Week and the Freshman of the Week. She shared Player of the Week honors with Northwestern's Mari Majam.

This is the third consecutive week and fifth time in nine weeks that Romero garnered the weekly freshman honors (Feb. 11, March 4, March 25, April 1). It marks the second time she has been awarded Player of the Week (March 25).

The shortstop helped U-M sweep Ohio State in a weekend series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. She batted .667 (6-for-9), including a double and a home run, with nine runs batted in. She also scored four runs, slugged 1.111 and finished the three-game set with a .727 on-base percentage.

Romero leads Big Ten players in runs scored (42) and total bases (108), and she is tied for first in home runs (15) and RBI (46). She ranks in the top 10 in several other offensive categories: slugging percentage (second, .848), hits (t-second, 51), on-base percentage (sixth, .503) and batting average (eighth, .415).

The Wolverines return to action with a non-conference game tomorrow (Tuesday, April 9) against Western Michigan at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex. The game will be broadcast by WTKA 1050.
