ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head softball coach Carol Hutchins announced today (Thursday, April 13) the addition of Natalia Rodriguez, a middle infielder and utility player from Clermont, Florida, to the program's incoming freshman class.
"I am very excited about Natalia joining our program," said Hutchins. "I think she is a great fit for Michigan. She's a great student, and she's a terrific all-around athlete. I just love her athleticism. I see her coming in to compete to play next year. I think she's very capable of playing at this level right away."
Rodriguez is the No. 57 nationally ranked prospect in FloSoftball's 2017 Hot 100 listing. She was named the 2016 Lake County Softball Athlete of the Year and earned Orlando Sentinel All-Area first team honors. Twice her team's All-Around MVP and Defensive MVP (2015, '16), she helped Montverde Academy reach the state Class 4A championship game last season. She holds the school record in every offensive category at Montverde, notably hitting .506 as a junior with 40 runs scored, 24 RBI and 31 stolen bases. Among her travel ball highlights, she captured a USSSA/ESPNHS World Series 16U "A" championship (2012) and, most recently, contributed to a seventh-place finish at the 2016 18U ASA Nationals.
Rodriguez also a four-year letterwinner on Montverde's basketball team. Her mother, Iris, played softball for Yale, while older brothers, Roberto and Sergio, played baseball at Georgetown and Amherst, respectively. In the classroom, she is a member of the National Honor Society, National Society of high School Seniors and National Spanish Honors Society.
The Wolverines' incoming freshman class stands at five players and features four currently ranked among the nation's top 100 recruits. Infielder Alexis (Lou) Allan, LHP Meghan Beaubien, infielder Taylor Bump and RHP Sarah Schaefer -- all signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period in November.
