PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Freshman Sierra Lawrence (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) of the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday (April 22). It is the first weekly conference citation in Lawrence's career.
The outfielder helped Michigan compile a 4-0 record in Big Ten contests in the past week. She batted .462 and recorded a hit, run and RBI in each game. In all she knocked in eight runs, scored five, collected six hits and stole one base.
Lawrence slugged her first career grand slam in game one of U-M's doubleheader with Iowa on Sunday (April 21). She tied a career best with four runs batted in during that contest. She equaled another career mark with her three hits against Indiana on Tuesday (April 16).
For the season Lawrence is batting .374 with eight doubles, six home runs, 34 RBI and seven steals. She is tied for the second most multi-hit games on the team with 14. Lawrence joins fellow freshman Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) as a Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree this season. Romero has claimed six weekly rookie awards.
The Wolverines play a non-conference contest against Central Michigan Tuesday (April 23) at the Wilpon Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live via the MGoBlue.com All-Access Player and on BTN.com.
