PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Network announced that it has chosen a pair of upcoming games for the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team as wildcard selections that will be broadcast live on BTN.
The network chose to add the Michigan-Northwestern games on Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, at the Wilpon Complex to its broadcast schedule. The live television coverage will affect the start times as both games have been moved up one hour: Saturday's contest begins at 1 p.m., and Sunday's gets underway at Noon.
The broadcasts mark the sixth and seventh U-M games to be carried by the Big Ten Network. Before the season began, the network announced it would carry five Michigan games with the possibility of adding more during a wildcard weekend.
Michigan is in pursuit of its sixth consecutive Big Ten crown and currently leads the conference with a 16-0 record. The Wolverines boast the top offense in the Big Ten with a .349 batting average, .538 slugging percentage and .434 on-base percentage. U-M leads seven other categories, including runs (348), hits (438), runs batted in (305), triples (13), home runs (55), total bases (676) and walks (182). Michigan's pitchers are striking out nearly a batter an inning (273 in 295.0 innings pitched) and have the third-best earned-run average in the conference (2.14).
The Wolverines are 66-32 all-time against the Wildcats. The game on May 4 will mark the 100th meeting between the two programs that first clashed in 1978.
U-M plays a non-conference game Tuesday (April 23) against Central Michigan beginning at 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex. The game will be broadcast on WTKA 1050 am and through the Big Ten Digital Network.
