PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference office announced today (Monday, April 29) that sophomore catcher Lauren Sweet (Corona, Calif./Santiago) of the University of Michigan softball team won the Big Ten Player of the Week award. It is the first Player of the Week award for Sweet and second conference honor of her career (Freshman of the Week on March 26, 2012).
The catcher batted .857 (6-for-7) in a three-game series against No. 20 Nebraska, and she reached base in nine out of her 10 plate appearances by walking three times. Sweet hit a home run in the series opener and finale on her way to knocking in six runs.
In game two, a 5-3 Michigan win, Sweet smacked the game-winning hit. Her two-run single in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and ensured U-M's comeback win. That hit was part of a 3-for-4 day for Sweet.
During Michigan's 19 Big Ten Conference games, Sweet is batting .468 (22-for-47) with six home runs and 27 runs batted in. She is also perfect in the field on 111 chances.
Sweet becomes the second U-M player to earn Player of the Week honors following two citations for freshman Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta), who won it March 25 and April 8.
The Wolverines conclude the regular season with three-game series beginning Friday (May 3) against Northwestern at the Wilpon Complex. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Michigan will wear pink jerseys to raise awareness for breast cancer research.
