ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan softball team will open its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament in the Tempe Regional against San Diego State on Friday (May 16) at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
On the other side of the bracket is the No. 9 overall seed in the tournament, Arizona State, and Dartmouth. The regional round is a double-elimination tournament.
The Maize and Blue will be making its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance (1992-93, 1995-2014). Michigan has earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament every season since 1995.
This will be the fourth time in U-M history that it will play a regional round on the road. On two of the previous occasions Michigan played a regional on the road, it captured the regional crown (2001, 2012). The Wolverines are 69-12 all-time in the NCAA Regional round and have won 15 regional titles.
The winner of the Tempe Regional will play the winner of the Tallahassee Regional. Florida State earned the No. 8 overall seed and will host Fordham, South Carolina and USF.
Michigan is 13-7 all-time against San Diego State, with the most-recent meeting coming in 2008 (a 3-0 U-M win on March 21). The Wolverines own an 11-10 record against Arizona State, with most-recent meeting coming on March 6 (2-0 ASU win). The Maize and Blue has never played Dartmouth.
All games from the Tempe Regional will be carried live on ESPNU.
