ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan softball team received the No. 10 overall seed for the 2011 NCAA Tournament and will host a regional for the 10th straight season, the NCAA announced Sunday (May 15) on ESPNU. U-M (51-4) is one of 16 schools to host a four-team NCAA Regional, with play starting Friday (May 20) and running through Sunday (May 22) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Michigan will host regional No. 2 seed Notre Dame, No. 3 seed Kentucky and No. 4 seed Western Michigan in double-elimination play. U-M begins regional play against Western Michigan on Friday (May 20) live on ESPN at 8 p.m. Notre Dame and Kentucky meet prior to the Wolverines and Broncos at 5:30 p.m. with the game aired live on ESPN2. The regional winner advances to the NCAA Super Regional, to be held Friday through Sunday, May 27-29.
Tickets for the regional tournament are priced at $12 for reserved chairback and $10 for reserved bleacher seats. General admission outfield bleacher tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors.
U-M softball season-ticket holders may purchase tickets on Tuesday (May 17) from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. by phone (734-764-0247 or 1-866-296-6849) or by visiting the U-M Ticket Office (1000 S. State St.). Tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Wednesday (May 18) at 8:30 a.m. and may be purchased online at mgoblue.com/tickets, by phone or in person at the U-M Ticket Office.
All tickets must be picked up in person starting Thursday (May 19) at the U-M Ticket Office. Ticket will call on game days will be located near the Wilpon Complex scoreboard at the entrance gate near the U-M Indoor Track Building.
The winner of the regional in Ann Arbor will move on to a Super Regional against the winner of the regional being hosted by Louisville in Louisville, Ky. That regional consists of No. 7 overall seed California, Louisville, Illinois-Chicago and Jacksonville State. The Super Regional is a best two-of-three format with the winner advancing to the eight-team Women's College World Series, scheduled for June 2-8 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Traveling to the Ann Arbor Regional for the fourth consecutive season, Notre Dame carries a 45-9 record into the NCAA Tournament and earned an at-large selection after falling in the semifinal round of last weekend's Big East Tournament. Kentucky, which holds a 36-14 season record, similarly claimed an at-large bid after losing in the SEC Tournament semifinal round, while Western Michigan rallied through the loser's bracket to capture the Mid-American Conference Tournament title and the league's automatic berth. The Broncos own a 25-28 record on the season.
This is U-M's 17th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 18th in program history. Michigan plays host to a regional for the 10th straight season and 17th time overall. Last season, U-M earned three straight victories en route to its sixth consecutive Super Regional appearance.
