Two Future Wolverines Win Gatorade Player of the Year Honors

June 12, 2013

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two incoming freshmen for the University of Michigan softball team, Abby Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) and Megan Betsa (McDonough, Ga./Union Grove), were recently named Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois and Georgia, respectively, by the Gatorade Company in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports.

The awards are given to the top softball player in each state with an emphasis on athletic achievement along with high standards of academic success and exemplary conduct both on and off the field. Ramirez and Betsa both signed National Letters of Intent in November 2012 to play for the Wolverines beginning in the 2013-14 academic year.

Ramirez is an infielder who batted .596 with 20 home runs and 48 runs batted in for the Trinity Blazers. Her 20 home runs set a new Class 4A record in Illinois as she led her team to the sectional finals. She also scored 60 runs, stole 20 bases, had an on-base percentage of .644 and slugged 1.519 this season. She is a two-time first team all-state selection as named by the Chicago Tribune and was a preseason MaxPreps All-American second teamer.

Betsa led Union Grove to a Class 5A state championship from the circle while compiling a 30-5 record with a 0.36 earned-run average. She struck out 463 hitters in 235 innings pitched. She was named the Class 5A Pitcher of the Year and is a four-time first team all-state selection. Betsa also produced at the plate, hitting .418 with four home runs and 32 RBI. During her four-year high school career, she won 95 games and struck out 1,349 batters; both totals rank fourth in state history.

The Gatorade Company and USA Today High School Sports will name one national Player of the Year later this month.

The Wolverines are coming off a season that saw their 10th appearance in the Women's College World Series and a No. 6 ranking nationally to finish the year. The Maize and Blue compiled a record of 51-13 and won the Big Ten championship for the sixth consecutive season. Ramirez and Betsa will be joined by outfielder Kelly Christner (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) and infielder Lindsay Montemarano (Seaford, NY/Seaford) as next season's incoming class.
