ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head softball coach Carol Hutchins announced today (Monday, Nov. 14) the signing of middle infielders Sierra Lawrence (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) and Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The duo will join the Wolverines in the fall of 2012.
"This is a great and very athletic class for us," Hutchins said. "It seems small because we are only announcing two right now, but we plan on adding more in the spring. Kids are coming here when they could have gone elsewhere, and that is a great thing for our program. We always bring kids here that can bring championships to Michigan; that is the goal once they get here. Those are the types of kids we are looking at.
"It was a small class for us scholarship-wise," Hutchins continued. "We picked up two really good athletes in the Sierras. They are both middle infielders who could play just about anywhere on the field. They are very offensive with really good sticks but also very good defensively. They will give us a lot of versatility."
Lawrence led Greater Atlanta Christian to a regional championship in 2011 after three straight region runner-up showings. During the 2011 season, Lawrence hit .568 and set school records in base hits (54), home runs (14), on-base percentage (.667), stolen bases (49), runs batted in (38) and runs scored (67). For her efforts during her senior season, Lawrence, a three-time all-county selection, was named the 2011 Gwinnet County Player of the Year. She helped the East Cobb Bullets to the 2010 ASA 18U Gold national championship with a perfect 7-0 record at the tournament.
Romero, the 2011 Southwestern League Player of the Year, hit 14 home runs while leading her team with 36 RBI, 33 runs and a .438 batting average during the 2011 season. She was named to CalHiSports.com's all-state first team, was an All-CIF selection and earned All-America honors following her junior campaign. Romero helped Victory USA to the Class A 14U ASA national championship in 2009 and participated in the 2010 USA Junior Softball Junior Women's National Team selection camp. A three-time scholar athlete, All-Valley and all-league selection, Romero carries a .403 batting average for her high school career with 25 home runs and 98 RBI.
"I feel like I have been waiting for them forever since they both committed as sophomores," Hutchins said of the duo. "I can't wait for them to get here. But that means I am going to be losing some people that I really don't want to leave. I think they are both great fits for Michigan, and they are both excited about joining our program."
The Wolverines will lose seniors Amanda Chidester (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini), Bree Evans (Bloomington, Calif./Rialto), Stephanie Kirkpatrick (Plainfield, Ill./Central) and Hilary Payne (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) to graduation following the 2012 season.
U-M will kick of the 2012 season against Louisiana Tech at the LSU Classic on Feb. 10.
