Women's Swimming & Diving to Usher in New Era with Wisconsin Dual
Danielle Tanselrecently concluded her third season as an assistant coach with the University of Michigan swimming and diving program, primarily serving as an assistant coach with the women's team. In her tenure, Tansel has helped the women's program jump 14 spots at the NCAA Championships (36th in 2013 to 22nd in 2015), while also coaching on deck for the men's program's NCAA Championship in 2013.
Prior to her arrival in Ann Arbor, Tansel spent one season (2011-12) as an assistant women's swimming coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She helped guide the Mustangs to the 2011-12 Conference USA team championship, where SMU broke 11 conference records (six individual, five relay) and swept the award stand, receiving C-USA Freshman of the Year, Swimmer of the Year, and Swimming Coach of the Year. With Tansel's help, SMU finished 16th at the NCAA Championships, with eight swimmers receiving NCAA All-America status, including two top-eight finishers and five top-16 finishers. Before SMU, Tansel spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond (2008-2011) where she helped the Spiders to a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference championships (2009, 2011) and contributed to the development of two Olympic Trials qualifiers and three NCAA Championships participants. Tansel got her coaching start at Oakland University, serving as a graduate assistant coach for two years (2005-07).
Tansel also has significant coaching experience on the international level. In 2012, she contributed to the development of three Olympians: Denisa Smolenova (Slovakia), Nina Rangelova (Bulgaria) and Therese Svendsen (Sweden). She also coached international record holders from Lithuania, Colombia and Croatia, and a pair of Canadian swimmers to top-16 individual finishes at the 2012 Canadian Olympic Trials.
Tansel was a four-year letterwinner at Notre Dame (2001-04), helping the Fighting Irish to four-straight Big East Conference titles. She's a former school record holder in the 100-yard backstroke, and on the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Tansel swam at the 2003 NCAA Championships, and was a four-time Big East Academic All-Star. She graduated Cum Laude from Notre Dame in 2004 with a B.A. in anthropology, and earned her master's degree in counseling with a school specialization from Oakland University in April 2008.
