IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team rose one spot to ninth place after the second day of competition at the Big Ten Championships on Thursday (Feb. 16), held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Senior Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was the team's highest finisher on the day, coming in sixth place in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 313.35. Minnesota leads the field after two days with 235 points.

The Wolverines came into Thursday night looking to defend their conference crown in the 200-yard freestyle relay from the year before but came up short, as the quartet of senior Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley), senior Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), junior Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville), and junior Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished in eighth place with an NCAA consideration time of 1:31.99.

Junior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) placed the same as in prelims in the 500-yard freestyle (10th place) but improved her time by nearly a full second from prelims, touching the wall at 4:43.50. Her time was a new career best and also was an NCAA consideration time. Senior tri-captain Kristyne Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was six-hundredths off her pace from the morning's preliminaries, touching the wall at 4:47.12 during the finals but improved two places to finish 14th.

Sophomore Courtney Beidler (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) was the Wolverines' highest finisher in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing 16th with an NCAA consideration time of 2:00.82. Junior Val Barthelemy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was the other Michigan swimmer in action, finishing 22nd at 2:02.19 in the 'C' final.

Mehesan was the only other Wolverine swimmer in action, finishing 11th in the 50-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 22.97. Dauw had qualified for the 'C' final via her tie for 19th place during the morning session but elected not to swim her second race.

The Big Ten Championships continue Friday (Feb. 17) from Iowa City. The preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m. CST, with finals starting at 6:30 p.m. Among the events contested are the 400-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and three-meter diving.

• Eight Wolverines set new career-best times on Thursday.

• Both Adrienne Bicek and Kristyne Cole each tied their career-best place in the 500-yard freestyle at the Big Ten Championships. Bicek's top finish was 10th, while Cole's was 14th, both places they achieved in Thursday's finals.

Kristyne Cole's time of 4:47.06 in this morning's preliminaries makes her the 10th-fastest Wolverine on the school's all-time list for the 500-yard freestyle.

Courtney Beidler set a new career-best time in the 200-yard individual medley during the morning session, touching the wall at 2:00.32. She is now the 10th-fastest individual on the school's all-time list for that race. It also was close to six seconds faster than her previous season best of 2:06.28, which was accomplished back on Oct. 21 against Toledo.
