COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team recorded nine NCAA consideration times and 10 season bests Sunday (Feb. 26) at the OSU Last Chance Meet at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The meet served as the team's last opportunity to improve times in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships next month. Team's entries are due by midnight on Monday (Feb. 27), and the official NCAA psych sheet and list of alternates will be posted Wednesday (Feb. 29).
Junior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and sophomore Angela Chokran (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) were the only Wolverines to swim an NCAA consideration time and improve upon a season best. Chokran improved on her time in the 200-yard breaststroke by one-hundredth of a second (2:11.41), while Bicek shaved more than two seconds off her season best in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:23.90).
Of the seven other NCAA consideration times, two came from the 200-yard medley relay. The "A" team of junior Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), Chokran, and seniors Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) came within a half-second of their season-best time, touching the wall at 1:39.68. The "B" team of freshman Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls' School), sophomore Nikki Hubbard (Granger, Ind./Penn), and juniors Julia Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) improved its time by almost two seconds, finishing at 1:41.88.
Mehesan swam the 50-yard freestyle three times (prelims, final and a time trial) and was clocked at 22.88, an NCAA consideration time, the last two races. Others recording NCAA consideration times included Andracki in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.52) and Cohagen in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.34), while senior Liz Johnson (Milford, Mich./Milford) earned her first consideration time in an individual race this season, finishing the 100-yard backstroke in 55.09.
A pair of freshmen had multiple season-best swims on Sunday, including three from Molly Schaefer (West Bloomfield, Mich./Marian). She swam in three freestyle races, including the 50-yard freestyle (23.89), the 100-yard freestyle (51.97), and the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.40). Alisa Zoltowski (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) improved on her times in the 100-yard butterfly (57.57 in the preliminaries) and in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.66). Junior Val Barthelemy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) also recorded a season-best time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.27).
In addition to Mehesan, others swimming in time trials included Hubbard in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.02), junior Melissa Lang (Edison, N.J./Bishop George) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.63) and Bicek and Barthelemy in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.20 and 2:04.43, respectively).
The Michigan divers will return to competition for the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, to be held March 8-10 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. Senior diver Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) will attempt to reach the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row. She will be joined at the meet by sophomore Erin Bridgewater (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) and freshmen Carey Chen (Vancouver, B.C./University Hill Secondary) and Marina Nazario (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas).
