BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) of the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished fifth (591.40) on the one-meter springboard Thursday (March 8) at the NCAA Zone C Diving Regionals, held inside the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Zone C will send seven divers to next week's NCAA Championships. Bianca Alvarez (Ohio State), Jennifer Chiang (Notre Dame) and Kelly Hendricks (Eastern Michigan) have earned three of those seven spots due to their first-through-third place finishes on one-meter. Lohman's fifth-place finish puts her at 13th in the queue with two days left, meaning she must wait to find out if she qualifies. The divers that finish first, second and third on three-meter will also go to NCAAs, assuming the divers who qualify for three-meter are different than the ones who qualify for one-meter. [ Qualifying Process ]
Freshman Carey Chen (Vancouver, B.C./University Hill Secondary) just missed making the finals, leading the three U-M divers in the preliminaries with a 19th-place finish (256.70). Sophomore Erin Bridgewater (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) finished 41st (229.65), and freshman Marina Nazario (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) finished 52nd (202.80).
The four Michigan divers return to the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center tomorrow afternoon (Friday, March 9) for the three-meter diving competition, which begins at 1 p.m.
