INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving 400-yard medley relay team today (Thursday, March 21) narrowly missed a spot in tonight's finals at the NCAA Championships held inside the IU Natatorium. The foursome finished 17th during preliminaries in an event in which the top 16 teams move on.

In the opening leg, freshman Ali DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) set a new career best in the 100-yard backstroke, coming in at 53.28. That time establishes the second-fastest career time in U-M history behind former swimmer Caroline Rodriguez's 53.15, set in 2009.

DeLoof was followed by junior Angela Chokran (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), senior Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and senior Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville). The team touched at 3:36.31, just .16 seconds behind 16th-place San Diego State.

Earlier in the day, freshman Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquios Ridge) topped her previous career best in the 200-yard individual medley. Oldershaw finished at 1:58.13, clipping .12 seconds from her career best, which she had swum twice in competition. The freshman claimed 22nd place in the event.

Teammate junior Courtney Beidler (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) finished just behind Oldershaw, placing 27th overall with a time of 1:58.40.

Senior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) began the day in the pool for the Wolverines. She took 42nd in the 500-yard freestyle, touching at 4:47.06

Four Michigan swimmers and one relay team will be back in the pool tomorrow (Friday, March 22). Beidler and Oldershaw will compete in the 400-yard individual medley, Bicek will swim in both the 400-yard IM and the 200-yard freestyle, Chokran will swim in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the 200-yard medley relay team is scheduled to compete. Day two of the NCAA Championships get underway inside the IU Natatorium with preliminaries at 11 a.m.
