Michigan Associate Head Coach Rick Bishop
Overall impressions of the meet ... "It was a great night for Michigan -- we came out charging at the defending Big Ten champions. We took off in the medley relay (to open the meet) and had a great swim -- we had two sophomores and a freshman. That was great. There were a couple points where momentum swung both ways. We closed within 20 points a few times. We were never really out of it. We had a great result on the 200 IM at the end of the meet; the girls were awesome. We improved our times on the relays and did so when we were facing a great team. We tried to create some chaos against the best team in the Big Ten, and we did that."
On putting swimmers in different roles ... "Courtney (Beidler) did a fantastic job in the 500 against the defending Big Ten champion, and she came in second. She probably hasn't swam that event in competition in two years. Bri (Jurries) swam the 200 breaststroke and said she could go in the 100 fly one event later. That is sudden change and being an athlete."
On competing against the defending Big Ten champions ... "We are talking about a top-10, top-12 team nationally. We are going at them like, why not us? Anything can happen on any given day, and that's what Mike (Bottom) talked about before we left. Let's go at them as hard as we can. We made them nervous, we made them run to check scores. It's a lesson our kids are learning, being great athletes, great competitors and not backing down from anybody."
On the strong showing of the sophomores and freshmen ... "We are a team, the whole concept is that we are a team. Our sophomores have another year of confidence -- they are growing into their roles, they feel they can assist the upperclassmen, they can introduce the freshman to the competition. Our freshman, like Bri and Julia swam well; we are very happy with our medley relay and how they did."
On what the team will work on from here ... "We can always be better, and that's something we always look at. We had a great meet, and we're excited to get back to Ann Arbor and keep improving. If we are improving, and we can understand that we can better, we know we're going to work on the details and improve on everything we do. I'm excited about how the team was working together and supporting each other -- the support from top to bottom was fantastic."
