ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Wins in nine events propelled the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team to its fifth straight win over Toledo, 171-121, in its home opener on Friday (Oct. 21) inside Canham Natatorium. With the meet already in hand, U-M opted to exhibition its swimmers in the final trio of swimming events, posting the fastest time in two of the three.
Senior Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) and junior Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) each won two events. Mehesan was the top sprinter on the evening, winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.25) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.20), while Cohagen swept both backstroke events, winning the 100-yard (55.95) and the 200-yard (2:00.65) races. Both were also on the winning 400-yard medley relay team at the open of the meet (3:45.26).
Senior Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and junior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) were the other two individual event winners for the Wolverines. Dauw won the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.28) and Bicek won the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.39).
A pair of underclassmen took home the diving titles against Toledo. Freshman Marina Nazario (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) won on three-meter (294.60), while sophomore Erin Bridgewater (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) was the one-meter champion (289.80).
Friday's meet was the first of three over the coming weeks inside Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines' homestand continues next Friday (Oct. 28), when they welcome Texas and Indiana to Ann Arbor. The meet will begin at noon and wrap up with an evening session at 6 p.m.
