Michigan Trails Stanford, Florida After Day One in Gainesville
Nov. 6, 2009 Site: Gainesville, Fla. (Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium) GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team trails both Florida (155-88) and Stanford (164-79) after Friday (Nov. 6) evening's session, the first day of a two-day, double-dual meet at Florida's Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. Fifth-year senior Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) scored another win in the 1,650-yard freestyle and has yet to be defeated this season in the event she won a national championship in back in 2008. Brunemann came out of the blocks strong with a split of 27.23 during the first 50 yards and slowly expanded her lead, winning the race by eight seconds. She is now 9-for-11 in event wins this season. Senior Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) came close to two first-place finishes, falling just short in the 200-yard individual medley and finishing fifth in the 100-yard freestyle. Kelly also swam the first 100 yards of Michigan's 400-yard freestyle relay squad that finished in second place. Over in the diving well, sophomore Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Claire) gave a second-place showing (283.25) on the one-meter board, while junior Rachael Ropeik (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was the Wolverines' top finisher on the three-meter board (257.40). Other top performances of the night included fourth-place finishes from sophomores Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./East) and Liz Johnson (Milford, Mich./Milford) in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Meanwhile, freshman Julia Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) provided Michigan with a lift by finishing in third in the 200-yard breaststroke. All three teams return to the pool tomorrow morning, as action wraps up at 8:30 a.m.
Michigan has never beaten Florida (0-8) or Stanford (0-6) in dual-meet competition. Brunemann met NCAA 'B' qualifying standards in both the 1,650-yard (16:11.47) and 500-yard freestyle (4:49.51) races. Kelly also met the 'B' standard in the 200-yard IM. Brunemann's time in the 1,650-yard freestyle shattered her previous mark of 16:28.09 by almost 17 seconds, set last Saturday (Oct. 31) against Texas and Indiana. Kelly swam the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle and was clocked at 50.53, 0.12 seconds quicker than her time of 50.65, which she recorded in the 100-yard freestyle earlier in the evening. Andracki was joined by two freshmen in the 200-yard breaststroke: Valerie Barthelemy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Melissa Lang (Edison, N.J./Bishop George). Stanford won nine of a possible 13 events Friday night.
