ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A small group of swimmers competed for the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team today (Sunday, Nov. 24) on the final day of the Michigan Open at Canham Natatorium. The afternoon was highlighted by two more qualifications for the upcoming U.S. Winter National Championships, which are set for Dec. 5-7.
In the opening event of the day, junior Kelsey Cummings (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) touched first in 16:26.54. Her time is an NCAA 'B' cut. Freshman Mary Kate Leary (Atlanta, Ga./Druid Hills) took third in the race, the first time she has competed in it collegiately. Her time of 16:44.53 qualifies her for the U.S. Winter National Championships. Leary also swam the 200-yard backstroke in 2:01.97, a new personal best.
During morning preliminaries, freshman Elizabeth Harty (Powell, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) qualified for the U.S. Winter Nationals in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.58, a new personal best. She finished fourth in the afternoon 'A' final.
In the lone relay of the day -- the 400-yard freestyle relay -- junior Molly Schaefer (West Bloomfield, Mich./Marian), freshman Celia Keany (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego),sophomore Olivia Samoray (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) and Harty finished fourth in 3:30.28.
U-M will next send a contingent of qualified swimmers to the U.S. Winter National Championships Dec. 5-7 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Celia Keany set a new personal best in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.69.
Olivia Samoray recorded a new personal best in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.28.
